Book Review – If We Were Villains

If We Were VillainsIf We Were Villains by M.L. Rio

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This novel was a veritable tour de force! Enjoyable and engaging from the first page to the very last page. Normally there’s at least something you can fault in a book, no matter how small, but I couldn’t find a thing here. If We Were Villains stands for me as maybe the best book I’ve read all year.

M.L. Rio has woven a rich tapestry of relatable characters attending a prestigious art school and used the backdrop of Shakespeare’s plays masterfully. The Bard’s prose lends an air of intrigue to an already finely written mystery. I won’t give it away but I didn’t see it coming!

These are just some of my favourite lines from the book that showcase the atmospheric writing Rio employs throughout:

“There is no comfort like complicity”

“How tremendous the agony of unmade decisions.”

“First, the reckoning. Then, the fall.”

“Come not between the dragon and his wrath”

The last quote is Shakespeare’s but I loved how Rio used it here. This is an author worth watching and an easy 5 star read.
